Musk, an audacious entrepreneur who is the chairman of SolarCity Corp (SCTY.O), chief executive of Tesla Motors Inc (TSLA.O) and the largest shareholder of both companies, envisions a one-stop shop for clean-energy fans, who would be able to buy an electric car, home solar system and battery backup in a single visit.

This is why Musk sees Tesla buying SolarCity as “common sense/blindingly obvious.” In his mind, the two companies’ customer bases overlap. People who want the Model 3, Tesla’s first mass-market electric vehicle, would presumably also want to trick out their homes with solar panels to charge the car’s battery, thus creating a totally green, totally sustainable feedback loop of self-righteousness. Customers strolling through Tesla’s gleaming showrooms will soon be able to browse the solar options while deciding whether to get Autopilot installed in their Model 3.

Tesla is building a large battery factory in Nevada, the Gigafactory, and has said from the start that the facility will supply components that will power cars and store solar energy.

The company “is actively involved in storage,” Pavel Molchanov, an analyst at Raymond James Financial Inc., said in an e-mail Tuesday. “Tesla clearly aims to become a broad-based player in clean tech, not just electric vehicles.”

If Tesla is able to master software connecting electric cars, energy storage and rooftop solar, Musk has the potential to create “an entirely new utility model,” Bromley said.
