The lawyer of a New York-based real-estate tycoon, who has accused top Chinese officials of corruption, says his client has applied for political asylum in the U.S.
Guo Wengui is in the United States on a tourist visa that expires later this year, and Beijing is seeking his arrest.
Chinese state media have accused him of fraud, money laundering and even rape – allegations he has denied.
His lawyer said on Thursday that Guo’s public tirades against the Beijing elite have made him “a political opponent of the Chinese regime,” hence why he is seeking asylum for better protection, as a visa can be canceled or revoked.
