Equipped with high definition cameras, audio, and interaction ability, each room at Lee Health Coconut Point is designed for doctors to assess patients—even when they’re not in the room. “In certain circumstances, specifically stroke, we don’t have a neurologist on site. Thirty-two thousand brain cells die every second, so trying to get a physician there as quick as possible, driving through traffic down 41 is not feasible. So how do we expedite that care safely and effectively,” said Jonathan Witenko, a business systems analyst with Lee Health.

Telemedicine allows doctors to evaluate and diagnose patients all from a remote location. After the assessment, physicians can design a plan of care for patients. “For now it’s for stroke, and then we’re going to add on service lines, so it’s really the high acuity service lines that we can’t treat here that we may have to transport,” said Witenko.

The technology saves patients time while getting them the medical care they need. “They call a code stroke, and a neurologist then connects and reviews the patient’s charts, reviews the CT scans, and then connects to the patient,” he explained.

Through telemedicine, patients have access to physicians in and out of the building. “The goal was to anticipate what is coming in the future, what is right here right now, and how we can be more efficient in our care,” said Witenko.

Designed to meet current and future medical needs, the facility offers patients access to quality care from physicians throughout Lee Health.
